Glen Hansard

Powerful. Personal. A great songwriter still looking forward. Experience the soul-stirring melodies and heartfelt lyrics of acclaimed Irish songwriter Glen Hansard as he takes to the stage at City Varieties.

Known for his introspective folk-rock, Glen Hansard has re-emerged with All That Was East Is West of Me Now showcasing his most rock-oriented sound since The Frames’ Burn the Maps era.

The title represents a shift in perspective, in favour of exploring uncharted territories instead of dwelling on the past. The recording process, guided by long-term collaborator David Odlum, was an intuitive leap, capturing the essence of live performances in  Dublin’s pubs.

The album’s emphasis on the future rather than nostalgia, is seen on tracks like Feast Of St. John and There’s No Mountain. All That Was East… marks a departure from his earlier work, showcasing Hansard’s evolving musical journey and his enduring passion for storytelling through song.

Glen Hansard is the lead singer and a founding member of Irish rock band The Frames. He is one half of folk duo The Swell Season, along with Czech pianist and vocalist Markéta Irglová. Together, they share an Academy Award for Best Original Song for Falling Slowly, from the film Once, in which they both starred. He has released five solo albums, including the GRAMMY-nominated Didn’t He Ramble (2015), as well as several EPs.
