Ernest & Celestine

Pay What You Can
Illustrated bear Ernest in a coat and bowler hat stood in front of some mountains with young mouse Celestine on his right shoulder who has a coat on and is holding an instrument case.

The exciting renovation of our local bear pit is the perfect excuse to watch the much-beloved story of the unlikely friendship between a bear and a young mouse.

We are collaborating with our dear friends at Leeds Civic Trust to help promote the exciting work taking place at our fellow grade II listed site, the Leeds Victorian Bear Pit, just around the corner on Cardigan Road, by screening a firm audience favourite which features, in our opinion, one of the best cinematic bears!

This beautiful animation is a charming story based on the popular children’s books by Gabrielle Vincent. In a world where bears are in charge and mice are downtrodden creatures, an unlikely friendship is formed. Ernest, a large brown bear working as a clown and musician, meets tiny Celestine, a clever little orphan mouse who has run away from a life where she doesn’t fit in. They have a very happy friendship until the other bears and mice find out and their anger forces the pair to hide. This lovely film explores themes of friendship, belonging and tolerance as Ernest and Celestine embark on an exciting and funny adventure.

For our Saturday screening, join us at 10.30am for a drop-in, self-led scavenger hunt to find the many bears who have snuck into various hiding places around our beloved cinema. It is followed by a brief introduction by the Leeds Civic Trust providing further information and insight into your local Victorian bear pit and the renovation project.
