Black and white. A man with a closely-shaved buzzcut and stubble looks out of a car window, wearing a hooded jacket and coat zipped all the way up. There is another man in the driver's seat in the background.

When two migrant labourers discover the body of an illegal colleague on site, they must drive out to the isolated and unfamiliar hills to quickly dispose of the problem. But when one demands to perform the dead man his rightful Islamic burial, nerves begin to fray and a righteous power struggle emerges. As the long and bitter winter night closes in on them, the two men must find a way to work out their differences if they’re to stand any chance of saving themselves and their sanity.

From director Jack King, The Ceremony tells an affecting story of two souls conflicted by their personal differences but bound by their common humanity and unwavering sense of morality.

Winner of the Edinburgh International Film Festival’s Sean Connery Award in 2024, The Ceremony is part crime story, part road-movie, part-surrealist drama. It gives an acute insight into the modern migrant experience, discarding politics and discussion around immigration or national identity.

This screening will be followed by a live Q&A with director Jack King & producer Hollie Bryan.
