Celebrating National Popcorn Day with poems about our favourite cinema
Earlier this week, our team at Hyde Park Picture House announced the winners of the poetry competition that marked The Picture House’s 110th birthday. What better way to celebrate the day of the classic cinema snack than by reading the winning poems about our magical cinema? Don’t forget your popcorn!

“A palace of dreams”
Thank you so much to everyone who entered our poetry competition to celebrate National Poetry Day and our 110th birthday! It was an honour to read your wonderful Hyde Park Picture House-related poems. We were so blown away that we ended up awarding more prizes than originally planned.
So many of the poems relating to the cinema were incredibly moving and revealed that HPPH has a lasting impact on lots of people’s lives which was really beautiful to read.
How much popcorn?!
As well as turning 110, Hyde Park Picture House celebrated a year since its reopening in 2024, and it’s safe to say Leeds is happy to have its classic cinema back. Maybe you joined us to squeal at The Substance, or to sob at Small Things Like These. One thing’s for sure; you can’t do any of that without a cinema snack.

Donations will support the ongoing maintenance of HPPH, including continuing to work with outside specialists to keep our building in great shape, investing in training to allow us to continue to learn about how best to work with a historic building and investment in the technology we use to continue to make the building truly work for all the different members of the community who need us.
