A group of teens dressed in 90s style outfits, baseball caps and trainers, one holding a boombox, crouch and pose in front of a graffitied wall, the text reading: Wild Style. Film Screening of the World First Hip-Hop Movie. In the bottom left, a turquoise logo reading 'INDIs Film Fest'. In the bottom right corner, a roundel featuring a playful illustration of a person sat peering over a bucket of popcorn, on the word 'explore'.

Part of Explore

The landmark hip-hop film presented as a special Easter event for older teens and adults. Featuring the hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Caz in the building!

Wild Style is more than just a movie; it is the cinematic blueprint for hip hop, capturing a cultural explosion as it fused music, art, dance and fashion.

Shot in 1981, it features key figures including Grandmaster Caz (with The Cold Crush Brothers), Fab Five Freddy, Lee Quiñones, Lady Pink, The Rock Steady Crew and Grandmaster Flash. The story follows Raymond, a Puerto Rican graffiti artist known as ‘Zoro’, as hip hop emerges and the scene faces the pull of the mainstream. Part drama, part snapshot, the film feels lived-in and real because it is. Its style, characters and performers come directly from the community that built the culture.

We’re thrilled to announce that Grandmaster Caz, widely known as one of hip hop’s first and greatest MCs, will be at the screening and will take part in a Q&A following the film, with trailblazing turntablist and musical polymath NikNak.

This screening will take place at Howard Assembly Room.
