War Horse is a story that’s been resonating with audiences for decades – not just since the premiere of the play in 2007, but since the book’s publication in 1982.
Michael Morpurgo’s timeless and permeating story of love in the face of adversity and the unshaking bond between people and animals has stayed in the hearts of audiences all this time – and with 2025 seeing the show remounted once more for a UK and Ireland tour, there has never been more proof that the story of Joey and Albert will go down in history as a certified classic.
As the show continues to wow audience at The Grand, we caught up with the cast to unpick the show’s staying power and impact.
Tom Sturgess has hopped into the saddle as Albert Narracott, loveable and earnest farmhand whose life changes forever when Joey trots back from the market.
Matthew Lawrence, Chris Milford and Felicity Donnelly are the puppeteers bringing the horse to life as the Head, Heart and Hind respectively.
Below, hear what they have to say about life on the show.
