Join Our Team - Technician

Purpose of job

We are looking to appoint an experienced Technician to maintain a smooth-running, efficient, and safe working environment for all staff and visiting companies. You will assist in building maintenance, including future works, and strive to offer the best possible service and a positive working culture for all users of our venues.

You’ll work as part of our technical team supporting work on stage and throughout our heritage buildings. You will assist with get-ins, fit-ups, get-outs, and, on occasion, running shows.

About you

You will have experience of working in a receiving house, and a good all-round knowledge of technical theatre, proven expertise of fit ups, rehearsals, shows, get-ins, and get-outs. You will have a broad understanding of all aspects of theatre, including stage, LX, flies, and sound.

You will know how to work safely and efficiently, getting on and working as part of a team.

On this occasion, we are keen to appoint someone with specific experience of working in the stage team and/or the flys team.

Salary and Benefits

Contract Type: Permanent. Locally agreed full-time buy-out

Responsible to: Heads, Technical Manager, Property Manager

Salary:£28,767.79 per annum

Holiday entitlement: 20 days plus bank holidays, rising after two years’ service

Probation Period: Four months

Application questions

  1. The technical team are required to work unsociable hours, including weekends, evenings and, at times, overnight. Confirm that you understand the operational needs of working in receiving house. I understand and am comfortable with the expectation to work unsociable hours – Yes/ No.
  2. What experience do you have of working in Technical Theatre? Your answer should tell us any previous positions held, where, and for what duration.
  3. What is your working knowledge of flying systems? Do you have any experience using automated flying systems? Your answer should detail all experience using any flying systems. Tell us about the system, your role, and the period you worked on the system. If you have working knowledge and experience of automated systems, please be specific.
  4. Occasionally, you will deputise for both Head of Flys and Head of Stage and will need to lead a team. Tell us about relevant roles you have undertaken where you demonstrated leadership. Tell us about the role, what you specifically did (for example, the people you led, and the circumstances, for example, the venue or show), and the periods for which you carried out those roles. We’re particularly keen to hear about leadership roles in technical theatre.
  5. What skills do you have that make you a good leader? This may include skills you developed in the roles you just told us about. Where possible, give us examples of you using those skills, rather than just telling us you have skills.
  6. Describe your approach to Health and Safety, specifically what makes a good Health and Safety culture in the workplace. Explain your approach to working safely. Your answer should detail your working knowledge of H&S, and awareness of technical regulations.
  7. What Health and Safety training have you completed? Give details of the course or learning, when you did the training, and who provided the training. If it isn’t clear from the course title what was covered, please include a summary of the key areas.
