Leeds Heritage Theatres Learning and Engagement Team

Every year nearly 10,000 young people of all ages take part in our Learning and Engagement programme. From theatre tours and creative workshops for schools, to youth theatre and holiday activities – read on to learn how you can play your part or find out more here.

Panto Skills Workshops

Based on panto traditions, these sessions explore the characters of Robin Hood and encourage students to create their own heroes and villains. With strong English and Drama curriculum links, students will practice theatrical techniques and learn about theatre job roles. These workshops can be delivered in our historic theatres or in school, and can be tailored for any key stage.

Holiday Activities

This February half term, explore behind the scenes at Hyde Park Picture House or try your hand at circus skills at Leeds Grand Theatre. No experience necessary – just get involved and have fun.

Spaces are still available on our Circus Skills workshop for 12-14s on Fri 16 February 2024. Get in touch via learning@leedsheritagetheatres.com to enquire about our other sessions.

LHT Youth Forum

Get involved with our Youth Forum, a group for 11-17s with a passion for the arts.

At Youth Forum, we will share ideas about how to welcome, entertain and educate future audiences. Through meetings twice a month across our three venues, you can meet friends, get a sneak peek of our venues and develop new skills.

Leeds Grand Youth Theatre

LGYT is a thriving, vibrant company open to all young people aged 8-18yrs. Our skilled professional leaders creatively challenge and support the development of every young person. Members develop theatre skills (acting, singing, dancing) alongside vital life skills including communication, confidence and empathy – all whilst making lasting friendships and having fun.

Technical Training

This year, we launched a technical theatre training programme in partnership with University Centre Leeds, in which Production Arts degree students attend weekly training sessions at City Varieties Music Hall and learn the essentials of any backstage role directly from our technical professionals. The students are also gaining first-hand experience of our working theatre space by supporting the current in-house panto season.

Leeds Heritage Theatres Engagement Fund

Every year, we work with over 10,000 young people across the city, in schools, youth groups and other sessions to help them build skills, confidence and pride through our creative learning and engagement programme. All donations to this fund will help us to continue our work and reach more people across the Leeds City Region.
